Legislative Activity

State-level legislation can be an excellent tool for advancing energy efficiency. SWEEP actively engages in the legislative process in all the southwest states, with efforts ranging from researching and writing bill language, to building coalitions in support of energy efficiency legislation, to testifying at committee hearings. Through these ongoing efforts, support for energy efficiency across the Southwest continues to grow.

  • 2018 SWEEP Legislative Activities Report
    In 2018, SWEEP actively supported a total of two energy efficiency bills, one of which was signed into law and the other was defeated. Of the five clean transportation bills, SWEEP supported four, two of which were signed into law and two were defeated. One clean transportation bill was actively opposed by SWEEP and it was approved.
  • 2017 SWEEP Legislative Activities Report
    In 2017, SWEEP actively supported a total twelve energy efficiency bills, six of which were signed into law. Five of the six bills were approved in Nevada. SWEEP actively opposed two bills, neither of which were approved.
  • 2016 SWEEP Legislative Activities Report
    In 2016, SWEEP actively supported four energy efficiency bills, all of which were signed into law. SWEEP actively opposed three bills, of which two were ultimately defeated.
  • 2015 SWEEP Legislative Activities Report
    In 2015, SWEEP actively supported 11 energy efficiency bills, of which five were signed into law. SWEEP actively opposed four bills, of which three were ultimately defeated.
  • 2014 SWEEP Legislative Activities Report
    In 2014, SWEEP actively supported a total of 15 energy efficiency bills, of which nine were signed into law. SWEEP actively opposed two bills; both were ultimately defeated.
  • 2013 SWEEP Legislative Activities Report
    In 2013, SWEEP actively supported a total of 19 energy efficiency bills, of which 16 were signed into law. SWEEP actively opposed three bad bills that ultimately were defeated.

    In 2007, SWEEP was busy tracking 26 bills related to energy efficiency, 12 of which were signed into law, 10 which were killed in committee or never included in the state budget, and 4 that remain pending further legislative action.

    In 2006, SWEEP worked closely on 11 bills relating to energy efficiency, 6 of which were signed into law, 1 of which was vetoed, and 4 which were killed in committee.
